In our “age of instant” reality is often obscured or hidden from us. I think everything will happen immediately. I think consequences will be immediate. Sin will be punished immediately and blessings will happen and be given to me immediately. But, when I decide to sin, I don’t see any immediate negative consequences. “When someone hears the word of the Lord, he may consider himself exempt, thinking, I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart. This will (eventually) lead to the desolation of your promised land.” Deut. 29:19 Of a certainty, my sins will (eventually) find me out. So, Why do the wicked prosper (now)?
Now, “if you faithfully obey the Lord your God, and are careful to follow(do) all the commands that He has given and is giving you each day, then (eventually) the Lord your God will raise you up and all these blessings will “come and overtake you”. Deut.28:1,2 (Blessings follow the doing) (Blessings are following me) If I am righteous, my children will live in the “lag effect” of the blessings that are following after me. “I will bless you to a thousand generations!” The “lag effect” is also what I am doing by laying up treasures in heaven. In the “lag effect” my reward is eventually great!
Back to the ungodly for a minute ….. The ungodly prosper now because it is their only positive reward for the good deeds they are doing on this earth. There is no positive eternal reward for them in heaven. God is just and fair. What they receive now are the only “blessings” they will ever receive. The “lag effect” for the ungodly is eternal separation from God.
What I daily enjoy the most are the little seemingly insignificant interactions and blessings that I experience. My blessings are catching up with me!
